I have so been waiting for this to come out, unfortunately I was raiding last night when it was released so I had to wait until the raid was over until I rushed over to jointheraid.com to see it.

I am feeling a bit dumb now as it seems their is nothing to see, nothing to buy, and just a lot of technical jargon about how a professional streaming site cannot create a watchable video in under 16 hours? C’mon people, I could have recorded with Fraps and had it online in under 2 hours.

Maybe the producer is just so rich that cash flow really does not matter but it is sad for me and my friends, who have been waiting a long time and then nothing.

I even have cash in hand ready to purchase, no apple stream for $3, no download for $10, nothing, nowhere.

I would fire your marketing and production department because they are costing you 10′s of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. And making you look inept with all this talk of taking so long to convert a couple hours of streaming video into a replay.

OK, I am done venting, darn. I really wanted to watch this.

I hate to say it guys – but if you go over to justin.tv and search got gamebreaker.tv, and go on their channel, you’ll see all the stuff they’ve streamed, including “The Raid”, not sure how long it’s gonna stay up there for, but it’s still there 18:30 GMT 7th aug

The replay is still happening, everybody. Gamebreaker has simply had a few issues with the encoding process of last night’s show. I can assure you it will be up some time today and we will begin the 72 hour replay time from that point.

Thanks for your patience! I will keep you updated as soon as I have more information!

For those who actually do want to purchase the film you can buy a DVD copy currently (with VoD coming over the next couple of weeks) at http://bit.ly/jointheraid.

    For sure, Dennis!

I’m going ahead and loading a separate version of the film to my vimeo account so folks can watch it while Gamebreaker finishes up. My temporary version will not include the pre/post shows from last night, but those will be available when GBTV posts sometime later today.

Thanks again for your patience! I’ll post here again when the encoding finishes (and edit the original post) and give you a link!

Thanks for screwing over half of your community, aka European people. I really wanted to buy the movie, but after seeing how you treat your costumers, i decided against you. I will just download the movie for free from http://thepiratebay.org/, since i don’t think you deserve the money.

  12. Kevin said: August 7th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

    Dear ES,

Do you mean the give away? If so, I would have to direct you to TypeFrag as those were the legal conditions they were dealing with. If I could have had my way the give-away would have been open to everyone world wide.

If it’s the film you’re looking for…it will be temporarily available on this page in a matter of minutes, and then on Gamebreaker.tv for free as soon as their encoding process is completed.

I didn’t make this film for money :) . We’re on the same page! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the film.

I still got a lot to say, but just wanna cut it short & say, well done, my hat goes off to you guys :)

This was more of a biography of Month Behind’s 10 man team than a documentary about MMOs. Would have liked to see some of their life outside the game such as interactions with family/friends, school, work, etc. Also would have liked to have seen multiple guild/clan types, different MMOs, and feedback during the film from the director. I didn’t think it was very clear to non-MMOers either. With that said, with the resources available, it was well done, just not sure I’d call it a documentary.

  25. Clay said: August 9th, 2011 at 10:02 am

Incredible job!!! I love the intro sequence. Really well done, and I know you’re relieved it’s over. Now that Cataclysm has been out for a while, it really made me nostalgic about the Lich King progression, which was my first raid experience. I thought the screencaps of the fights were really well done.

My wish list for Raid 2 – The Reckoning… Show someone working their keyboard during a raid to show how complex the mechanics can be. Show a diagram or flow chart of a fight to show what each player needs to do at each phase. (Again, to communicate the difficulty and to reinforce how a team has to work together). Also, more explanation of acronyms during the film. You did a good job at the beginning, but as acronyms got peppered into conversation, a complete noobie would’ve gotten lost. I know this isn’t meant to be a training video, so I can understand why you might taper off on things like that once the film got moving.

But again… great work. You should be proud!

Hi all, there is any possibility to get the video with subtitles? Non-english people like me will be appreciate this detail, sometimes reading is better that hearing ;)

So I watched The Raid twice and I figured I would share some of the thoughts I jotted down while viewing the second time. I think Kevin worked very hard on this and so I think he deserves some honest input and constructive criticism which I am hoping to provide. Whether or not I will succeed is a different matter entirely ;)

First I do want to say that it’s pretty obvious how much work was put into this, and I am astounded that this is his first film. Well done! As far as others’s comments on the appearances of the guildies shown in the movie, well they look pretty normal to me. If you think they aren’t then I’d suggest going outside and grabbing the first 8 random people you meet and seeing what you come up with. I even thought Julie was pretty cute, I just wished her hair was down so we could see more off it /girlcrush.

On to my notes. I decided it would just be easier to break it up into what I liked and didn’t like.

    +dkp
The guest speakers really grounded the movie, I felt. I liked what Jesse Schell, Edward Castronova, and Bonnie Nardi had to say.
I liked the way that MMOs in general and Icecrown were defined.
I thought it was great that Bonnie said that WoW was just another hobby like collecting stamps, and that people really just want to achieve something.
I also was a little surprised that they went down the typical “video games are addictive” route but I think they handled it well. For example, when Edward said that he classified it as a “problematic usage of time” and that not just WoW can be addictive. I liked that they touched on the stigma attached to gamers.

    -dkp
The foul language. Yes it’s been said before. And yes I can see the angle of wanting to accurately capture guild discussion. I think it is okay to show the occasional swear word when it’s bringing attention to something important and is making a point relative to what the documentary is trying to show. However I think that it added nothing here but a lowering of the standards of the movie. There is no doubt that if you showed this documentary to non-gamers (which is what I believe was the intent) that many would be offended by such statements as “Rape your face off” “Fuck you” “Stupid Douchebags” “A retard’s job is to not look creepy” plus more rape jokes. There is no way I would feel comfortable showing this movie to any non-gamer I know because this does not resemble anything like what my guild and raiding environment is like and I would not want them thinking that it was.

Lore’s girl drama comment. That’s all I’m gonna say. Poor Lore. /facepalm

I wish some of the interviewees were a little more articulate and had thought out answers. But I can’t really fault them for that, they aren’t public speakers and aren’t used to having a camera in their face. I also have no idea if they were allowed to prepare answers or if they were just put on the spot.

Another reason why I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing this to non-gamers is that there’s a lot of terminology and concepts mentioned that they just wouldn’t get such as: buffs, alts, pvp, vent, normal and heroic, 10 and 25, wiping, deeps. I feel like I’d have to watch it with them and then pause it every 3 minutes to explain.

    ~What I would have liked to see~

I wish the movie would have been a little more balanced regarding the pros and cons of gaming. It certainly didn’t shy away from gaming addiction, health problems, lack of scholarly discipline, etc. I felt like it could have countered that with some of the benefits with gaming, especially social gaming. For some people who didn’t socially develop much in high school or college, a MMO can be a step towards learning real interpersonal and communication skills. If you’re in a leadership postion such as a GM or Officer, you learn how to deal with people’s drama and you learn how to take responsibility and lead, how to contribute to your guild and push for the success of the guild overall rather than the success of any one individual. All those things you can apply to business. Aside from people skills you can also learn tangible skills from being in a gaming community like how to create machinima, record and produce podcasts, maintain community sites or write strategy guides. That also brings up how people have actually created ways to earn a living off of the industry; like TotalBiscuit, the Yogscast, and Jesse Cox. I don’t know too much about the money aspect of these things but I’m pretty sure that TankSpot and their official video authors (Lore, Aliena, Pappapaint? etc) makes some sort of income through youtube advertisements and views, Gamebreaker.tv contributors, and so on. Another benefit is that you have the potential to create real lasting friendships. I’ve been in my guild for about 4 years now and a lot of us live in the same general part of the US, so a few times a year we’ll have a meetup and have a ton of fun.

It would have been nice for them to break down roles in a raid and what skills are needed to lead a raid. What is a tank, a healer or a dps? What makes each job hard? How much work is put into researching a class? Are female tanks rare? Why? Are female healers more common? Why? How long does a raid last and why aren’t interruptions ok? Why isn’t it okay to not show up for a raid at the last minute? (Many nongamers don’t understand that a raid is a commitment of time between you and 9-24 other people and that leaving it or just not showing up is a big no-no.) What does leading a raid entail?

There wasn’t any mention of what PvP is so I guess it was intentional to leave that out completely since the title of the film was “The Raid” and all.

I also wish they would have gotten some more perspectives outside of the featured guild. With so many good vloggers out there I think it would have been great to add them in and it wouldn’t have been difficult. The subject of girl gamers was touched on, I think it would have been cool to have asked Aliena, TradeChat, Quixotica, taintedlore, indiegarona, and Pokket some questions about their experiences. I think they all have webcams (not sure about indie) and it wouldn’t have to have been that long either. It also would have been great to interview TotalBiscuit, Yogscast, Jesse Cox since they all love to talk and are funny and would have provided some decent material (and publicity). Another bonus would have been that they would have shown that gamers do exist outside of the US :P

    =====

That’s about all I have to comment on. Again, a lot of work was put into this and it came out pretty decent. Is this a movie I’d show to people who don’t play MMO’s? No way. Would I watch it with my guildies and other people I know who play? Sure! I hope nobody took offense to anything I said, I really just wanted to be honest and give what I thought were helpful comments. Thank you for making The Raid.

Hey Kevin, I think that while your movie did a great job of portraying WoW players as the social beings and critical thinkers that they are, I think the one thing that would have pushed this documentary over the top would have been if you included one kill video with vent. This would show outsiders the complexity and the coordination that actually goes into getting a kill, as I find it doesn’t really come out that much in the current documentary other than from testimonies from players. To actually show the difficulty of a fight, showing an actual kill would have spoken a lot louder. I thought it was a big let down when you built up so much to that last fight against the lich king on heroic and all we saw of the actual kill was about 1 minute of some 3rd person filming. I think that it would have been much better if you included the full LK kill video from the perspective of one of the members that included vent for the fight. Just my 2 cents but keep up the good work.

    I give this about a 4/10.

It was going great at the introduction, then completely fell off the table with what was going to be delivered. When the director had said, “I want to show people what raiding is about” That’s great, you did that, but you threw it all into on giant pile and said “This is raiding.”

To be a critic from raiding and raid leading, especially from a healing position; You should have established the core fundamentals a lot more firmly and with thought. Everyone knows what WoW is (Nerdy, computer online game). It’s been around for awhile so there was no need to establish that all over again.

I raid leaded through cataclysm T11 with 3 people who never raided before and 5 others who hadn’t raided since Burning Crusades expansion. It was a mage and me, Priest, that had a more fulfilling idea of what Cataclysm required for raiding.

I had to break it down literally what raiding was about and what would happen. True to that it takes a pure experience to fully grasp what it is, but I explained everything from the ground up about RAIDING. Which this film basically skimmed over and was more focused on confusing camera shots and huge User Interfaces with shit everywhere.

I would have started out by mentioning this is a player, this is a players UI, this is what a raider sees and understands, this is the group, and here’s the groups setup (Tanks, healers, DPS) Here are their roles, here are the strategies they come up with. Raiding is all about the strategy and modifying it not only to the fight, but TO EVERYONES play style. It might be practical for an Off Tank to pick up adds but the pure ability to have a mage pick up Adds for a specific strategy that may benefit a different group would have been a CORE point to make in this video that its UP TO THE RAIDERS on how to kill a boss. That is raiding.

RE: Default’s comment. I think you missed the point of the documentary – I think this doco highlights WHY people raid, and what it is that drives a group of people to stick together through thick and thin to succeed together. I don’t believe there’s a single documentary with enough time in the world to actually explain how a raid really goes down. Or, there is, and it costs $US15 a month.

The doco wasn’t what I was expecting – I was expecting something more along the lines of what Default posted, but in retrospect, the ONE THING that outsiders don’t get is WHY we do it. Why we prefer to spend time online than IRL. And this doco pinpoints exactly what it is that keeps us in game – the relationships we develop with our Guildies and community.

And even then, haters gonna hate.
